Renée de Pélagie was the Marquis de Sade's wife, and history has mostly kept her in the margins of his story. The panel carries handwritten passages from Dumas and Proust running in both orientations, so the drawing has to be turned to be read — you can't take it in from one position, which is roughly what it took to see her at all.
